The one thing 2016 is being really good to me about? TV.

Lucifer. If you're not watching. GO WATCH. He's fabulous. The show is fabulous. I am in stitches every time. But it's also dark and human and intriguing.

Yes, that's right. FOX did by ep 2 what NBC suggested they might do in "20 years" with Constantine. And, I haven't read the Lucifer comics, but from what I can gleam via google, Lucifer isn't portrayed as bi in the comics? So FOX makes the devil bi (which yes, we can talk about how "evil" (male in particular) characters are more often portrayed as sexual minorities, but Lucifer is on a path perhaps to morally grey/goodish and is the protagonist), when NBC can't even acknowledge a canon character's bisexuality.

I honestly don't know if I'm most in love with FOX, with Neil Gaiman for creating the character, or Tom Ellis for playing him so spectacularly.

Me, right now:

I watched the first Lucifer, and I recorded the second one. Was hooked with the first episode. How awesome was X-Files Monday night? That lizard man thing. Most epic episode ever. LOL!

Yay! I really hope it gets to stick around. I'm kind of surprised by the fandom not being interested in it so far.

And yes, I LOVED last night's XF! Brilliant in so many ways. I need to do a post regarding XF but I feel like I have a lot brewing which takes time while this post took me 2 minutes to type up in excitement.

Fox is always quick to cancel shows. Lucifer better stick around! They canceled Almost Human with Karl Urban after one season, and I enjoyed that show too.

LOL! Excitement over new X-Files episodes! They are going too quickly though. Before we know it they episodes will be done. :-(

Yeah, I hadn't even gotten a chance to watch that show before it got canceled. One day I'll have to watch.

I know! Only 3 more. :(

Yeah, I guess I don't understand. Lots of people have said things like this, but I'm not sure what you're looking for? I think the show is funny, smart, and interesting. And while Lucifer is becoming more ~human, he's absolutely still stuck on "punishment" and he's a scary bastard when he wants to be. He's very much a Crowley (aka Neil Gaiman) depiction of a demon which is my favorite so it's hitting all the right buttons with me. And I know some people are annoyed with the case of the week format, but it is only ep 2 and Constantine had the exact same structure and people loved that? I guess maybe the murders aren't occult enough? *shrugs*

Aw, I love the cop. I think she's a little stiff so far, but I also like she's willing to play into a) what she thinks is a delusion of Lucifer and b) plays her femininity to get things she wants (i.e. when Lucifer seemed to think she was making a move on him but she was just checking for a bullet proof vest). I suspect a lot of people will not like her because she frankly is the definition of a "Mary Sue" in that she has one unique talent no one else does. But I also kind of like that a woman is getting that position - it's a contrast say to Supernatural where its dudes who have all the special talents and the demons who try to seduce them/figure them out are female. And since she is the only one, it lessens the whole "man confused by woman" trope it could have been.

(The jealousy trope between the female demon and Chloe might get a little old though, if only because it feels like a trope of the demon losing Lucifer to the "good girl" rather than an emphasis on the demon being frustrated by Lucifer's encroaching humanity. I'm hoping she gets a bigger role to play.)

I like the shrink too in that she sees him a little too clearly despite his own enchantment upon her (and some serious ethical violations she's making, lol).

And yes, last night's case itself was dull, but I think that was because the case wasn't the point, but rather the effects and its influence on Lucifer and Chloe. Makes me think of Castle where 80% of the time I am bored by the case (and figure it out 10 minutes in) but I keep coming back for the characters connections with one another.

Anyway, I'm not trying to make you change your mind, just highlighting, I guess, why I like it. :)

Thanks for the info. The pilot really didn't do it for me, but that's good to know. Can you give me some details? Did he have sex with a guy or is there some potential romance?
MF Luder: Arrow Black Canarymf_luder_xf on February 2nd, 2016 02:40 pm (UTC)
I mean you don't see anything explicit. But there is a scene where Lucifer wakes up in bed with his female demon and another dude. The camera specifically focuses in on the guy (who is on the other side of the woman). I am sure many straight dudes can read it as Lucifer and the dude didn't do anything, but I feel like the zoom is a nod. Who knows if we'll see more in the future (either explicit sex or romance) but for me it's kind of big because of how NBC refused to do anything like that with Constantine. I am also a fan of how he does his whole "tell me your desire" schtick exactly the same with men as women. They could have made it so he delivers those lines in a dudebro-ish way or with a straight face, but instead he does the same lean in and flirting/convincing smile.

I'm really surprised so many people weren't into the pilot. I kind of expected all the SPN/genre fans to love this show. :/

Yeah, I thought about that in the pilot. And like you said, I'm sure straight men can more or less ignore it, but it's still more than anything the Constantine team >_> ever gave us.

I'm really surprised so many people weren't into the pilot.

From what I've seen, Lucifer (the character) left people either utterly charmed or completely disinterested. No middle ground. I'm part of the immune.

Also, most of the reactions I've seen come from bi women. I wonder if it works well on straight women and badly on lesbians.

Interesting. I haven't talked to enough people yet about the show, but at least this post seems to suggest you are right on the polarization. And perhaps true on the bi thing, too. Which is really interesting! I didn't go into the pilot expecting anything (unlike I did with Constantine's development) so if it appeals to bi women but not genre people, I wonder what it is.

I've seen two more positive reactions since then and I think both women are straight. I'm bi and it didn't work on me and it definitely made me think: "I'm so gay" (which I'm not, and bi isn't half-straight/half-lesbian, but you know, that was the inner reaction I got from watching this guy on my screen).
