"reader" fic what
Apparently it's a thing to write "reader" fanfic...where it's all written in second person so that the reader is actually "you"...and some of these stories then include main character/reader smut?

It is the epitome of self insert fic. It is not trying to hide itself at all. And I just...?

I tripped across that in MCU fic. I mean really, WTF?

Wow, I have never seen it there. I mean, I get the compulsion; many of us fantasize about our fav characters/actors, but a good writer should be able to place the reader there without needing to specify it is them specifically in the scenario. It's very...self-indulgent.

Fortunately, I haven't noticed it lately, but yeah, I had the misfortune of tripping over it. Maybe it was the same girl writing a series or something. Ugh.

It seems to be a growing trend. I'd heard of it before coming across one, but I just do not get it.

Yeah - it is all over the place in SW: TFA. I really hadn't seen it anywhere else before that. Really strange.

I'd heard of it recently but actually coming across it was just so weird. I guess I wasn't sure I believed it before.lol

Ugh, sorry, I didn't have enough sleep and spent the last six hours looking for geocaches in freezing temperatures, so my brain might be a little slower on the uptake. But... how does it even work? Can you link me to some example, please?

I didn't actually read any through, just skimmed it because I was so confused/weirded out by the pairings and the summary (I was just skimming for Constantine fics broadly): http://archiveofourown.org/works/4824227

I find second person weird enough when it's reading an established character ala fanfic (hell, I don't even like it in non-fanfic) i.e. from Dean's perspective where Dean is "you" but this kind of blows my mind.

Hee, thanks for the link, now I get it. Or not really, because uh... it seems really strange (not to mention I was inclined to count all the You's used, instead of reading the fic, lol), but the story really shouldn't be about the reader, but the characters. I think most people don't have any problem to feel for these characters when reading about them in third person anyway. Well, at least I learned about something new and interesting today, thanks;)

Right? I feel like if a story's decent, I feel like I am the characters anyway so I don't feel the need to personally, as myself, be included in the fic. It's so odd.

Ha, you're welcome!

it's been around for a while. i remember my sister was really into reading reader/orlando bloom fics over a decade ago. i have noticed more in certain fandoms of mine on ao3 l8ly. i don't think we share any fandoms tho.

*shrugs* it's not really my thing, but it doesn't surprise me and idk why it should try 2 hide itself. i mean, lots of ppl are pretty str8forward about fantasizing about hooking up with their fave characters/celebs/whatever all the time, heh.

In my 11 years of fandom I have never come across one until the other night. I guess we learn new things every day.

And yeah, I am not suggesting it "try" to hide, but rather, my whole fandom career I've only ever come across the notion that self-insert fic is bad, mary/gary sues are bad, so to see stories where people are just blatant "this is self-insert fic!" rubs against everything I learned in fandom.lol
